Sheldon J. Kaplan, M.D., F.A.C.S., Vitreal-Retinal Specialist
Sheldon J. Kaplan, M.D. specializes in all areas of Vitreo-Retinal diseases and surgery. He is heavily involved in area Sight Loss Support Groups, having founded three of them in Berks County, Schuylkill County and Susquehanna County. Most recently, he organized the Pottstown Sight Loss Support Group. The purpose of these groups is to help those patients with sight loss adapt to their disability.
Dr. Kaplan took his undergraduate degree at Colgate University, and his medical training at the George Washington University School of Medicine. He spent a clerkship for neurology in London at the Queens Square Neurologic Institute, followed by two years in health service. He then completed one year of medical residency at Boston City Hospital Tufts Medical Division. Dr. Kaplan than completed a three year ophthalmology residency at Boston University, Tufts Affiliated Program. Dr. Kaplan also trained as a Vitreo-Retinal surgeon in a major diabetic center in Wisconsin with Dr. Matthew Davis.
For two and a half years, he researched diabetic and radiation retinopathy. In completing his Vitreo-Retinal fellowship, he performed multiple retinal detachment and vitreo-retinal surgeries. He has presented papers to various ophthalmologic groups on many aspects of vitreo-retinal disease and surgery. He spent 10 months on the Hospital Ship Hope, treating and training his Brazilian counterparts in Brazil in retinal surgery. He spent one month working in the Missionary Hospital in Nicaragua, as an ophthalmologist.
Dr. Kaplan joined our practice in 1986, after being the Chief of Vitreo-Retinal Service at the Geisinger Medical Center. Dr Kaplan is experienced in the use of perflourocarbon liquids, SF6 and C3F8 gases in the repair of complicated retinal detachment. Dr. Kaplan is also trained in advanced vitrectomy, scleral buckle and laser procedures for treatment of diabetic eye diseases, macular puckers, macular holes, subretinal hemorrhage and age-related macular degeneration, including PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT), intravitreal Macugen injection for wet ARMD and intravitreal Kenalog injection for Macular Edema. He has staff privileges at Pennsylvania Eye and Ear Surgery Center, the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, Physicians Care Surgical Hospital, and The Pottsville Hospital and Warne Clinic. Dr. Kaplan is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.
