About the LASIK Technique

Our surgeons use bladeless custom LASIK, widely regarded to be the best method for several reasons. For starters, it is the most technologically advanced form of LASIK vision correction. In fact, Air Force surgeons and NASA surgeons exclusively use the bladeless LASIK technique on pilots and astronauts, because it offers several advantages (our surgeons agree):

  • Reduces the risk associated with using a metal surgical blade on the surface of the eye
  • Allows the surgeon to create a thinner, more precise flap in the cornea
  • Provides better corneal stability
  • Allows surgeons to correct a higher level of vision correction
  • Accommodates surgery on both eyes in the same session

What is the procedure like?

LASIK eye surgery is painless and short – very short. Most patients expect it to be a longer procedure, so they are usually pleasantly surprised. The quick procedure involves three steps:

Step 1: The surgeon creates a corneal flap using a femtosecond laser, then gently folds the flap back to expose the cornea.

Step 2: A second laser called an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea’s surface.

Step 3: The corneal flap is put back into positions to heal without requiring any stitches.

The excimer laser changes the refraction by correcting the steepness of the cornea to alter the way the eye focuses light. Nearsighted patients have a cornea that is too steep, so the surgeons flatten the cornea’s center to improve distance vision. The cornea is too flat in patients with farsightedness, so surgeons make the cornea steeper to improve close-up vision. In patients with astigmatism, the cornea is irregularly curved, so vision is not in focus. Surgeons use the excimer laser to smooth the cornea and make it more symmetrical.

Bladeless LASIK has a tremendous success rate and may even reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Am I A Good Candidate?

Modern bladeless LASIK is safe and accurate, but most importantly, it is a customized vision correction technique. The state-of-the-art bladeless LASIK technique is typically suitable for most patients. Some patients will not be good candidates, but we can discuss this at your initial consultation. Our professional staff will perform a comprehensive eye evaluation to test for factors like corneal thickness, pupil size, refractive error, astigmatism and other measures to determine your eligibility for LASIK surgery.

If we don’t think you are a good LASIK candidate, we will explain why and will also offer alternative treatments to correct your vision.
