LASIK is short for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, more commonly known as laser eye surgery or laser vision correction and involves the use of two sophisticated laser technologies to treat three common vision issues: nearsightedness (poor distance vision), farsightedness (poor close vision) and astigmatism (blurry vision both close and distant).

Chances are, your vision falls into one or more of these categories, and you probably are wearing glasses or contact lenses to correct the vision issue. LASIK might be right for you. LASIK received FDA approval nearly 25 years ago in 1995. Since then, there have been many surgical advances.

When the surgery was first invented, it used blades, but the procedure has now evolved to the bladeless category, instead using the sophisticated lasers: femtosecond laser and excimer laser. The procedure has better patient outcomes with far fewer side effects.

How does the surgery work?

LASIK changes the shape of the cornea to change the way your retina focuses images, which in turn corrects your vision. Two steps are involved. First, the femtosecond laser is used to create a small flap on the cornea. Next, the cornea is reshaped using the excimer laser. Prior to the surgery, our eye care professionals create a unique customized map tailored for your eye or eyes, then reshape accordingly. Finally, the corneal flap is put back into place. No stitches are required; the cornea incision will heal on its own. The actual active laser part of the procedure is less than 10 minutes for both eyes. The prep time before the surgery takes a bit longer.

Should I have concerns about the procedure?

The two most common questions we get at Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania are “does LASIK hurt” and “what if I blink during the procedure?” Regarding the pain question, LASIK does not hurt. Numbing drops are placed in your eyes before the procedure begins, and you may be given a relaxation pill beforehand, too. Most patients describe the LASIK sensation as slight pressure.

The same numbing drops take away the urge to blink, but we also place an instrument on your eye called a lid speculum to gently hold the eyelids away from the laser. You can see during the entire procedure, but your vision will be blurry as the surgeon performs the surgery.

We ask that you go home after your procedure and rest your eyes. The next day, you will wake up with 20/20 vision. Patients corrected for extreme nearsightedness may take a bit longer for the eyes to adjust to normal vision. There is no downtime; in fact, most people are back at work the very next day. Just to make sure results are progressing normally, we will schedule a follow-up consultation within 24-48 hours.
