What is LASIK?

LASIK is a vision correction surgery that uses two types of lasers. By reshaping the eye’s surface with the lasers, the surgeon is able to correct vision. LASIK is short for laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis. Our surgeons prefer the bladeless LASIK technique. It uses two different types of lasers. The surgeon first uses a femtosecond laser to create a thin flap in the cornea. The surgeon then gently folds the flap back to expose the surface of the eye. The surgeon then corrects vision by reshaping the corneal surface using a second laser called an excimer laser. Once this is done, the surgeon repositions the flap to heal in place – no stitches required.

Who can have LASIK?

Most adults are candidates. Patients need to be at least 18 years old so that the vision has stabilized. We also like our patients to have an eyeglasses prescription that has not changed in the past year, once again for vision stability.

Some people are not good candidates for LASIK but we can talk with you about other vision correction options. First, some of our patients have diseases or use medications which impair healing, so if you fit this description, LASIK may not be your best option. We will do a thorough corneal exam; some patients have corneas that are too thin for LASIK. People who are prone to eye infections or who have severe dry eye may also not qualify. Finally, if you are pregnant, we ask that you wait until after the birth for your hormones to stabilize enough to have LASIK.

Is LASIK safe, and is it successful?

LASIK is extremely safe. In fact, it is one of the safest surgeries you can have. It is extremely rare that a patient will have serious problems after LASIK. The most common issue is dry eye, but we can prescribe drops to help, and the problem usually subsides in a few months as the eyes fully heal. Some people experience temporary blurred or hazy vision or difficulty seeing at night as the eyes heal after surgery. These issues resolve usually after six months or less.

LASIK is also very successful and most patients have 20/40 vision or better. In fact, most people do not need their glasses or contact lenses after the surgery. If you have LASIK and then later reach age 40, you may need reading glasses. This is unrelated to the LASIK but instead is called presbyopia, a natural aging process that changes the eye’s ability for close-up vision electronic uses.
