Macular Degeneration Treatment in Douglassville, PA

Are you age 60 or over? You might be experiencing symptoms like peripheral or central vision loss caused by a common condition known as age-related macular degeneration or AMD. When a person has AMD, the retina’s light-sensing cells are damaged, and a loss of central vision occurs. AMD is actually the leading cause of vision loss in America. Therefore, eye exams are essential so that AMD can be detected early. If it has been a while since your last exam, come see the professionals at Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania. If you are in Douglassville, PA, macular degeneration treatment is available in our nearby Pottstown office.

Tell me more about AMD

AMD affects the macula, a part of the retina that contains light-sensitive cells. Macular damage occurs when a person has AMD. Abnormal proteins called drusen form and deposit onto the macula, and sharp central vision becomes clouded. Over time, a person will develop a central blind spot.

There are two types of AMD: wet and dry. Most people have the dry form. The wet form of AMD is quite rare and is a rapid-onset condition. However, both forms result in a loss of central vision.

Both genetics and nutrition play a role in AMD. If you have a relative with AMD, you are more likely to develop it. Nutrition is key; vitamins C, E, and beta-carotene are important, as are minerals like zinc and copper. All of these help reduce the risk of vision loss. Omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, and zeaxanthin are also essential eye health nutrients.

Can AMD be treated?

Several AMD treatment options exist. Our doctors will determine the best treatment for you based on the form of AMD you have, its progression, and its severity. All AMD treatments are geared to prevent further vision loss and preserve the remaining vision you have.

One treatment we use is called photodynamic therapy (PDT). Our doctors trust this as a safe and effective treatment. PDT uses a light-sensitive drug to stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels near the macula. PDT also stops leaking from abnormal blood vessels that have already formed in the area. The PDT medication is injected into the arm and absorbed by the blood vessels in the eye. The doctor then activates the medication with a light, and the activated medication stops the abnormal blood vessel growth. Treatments will likely need to be repeated over time, but it is safe to do so.

We also use laser therapies and can provide vision aids to help with low vision.
