If you live or work in Phoenixville, PA, the best eye doctors are in nearby Pottstown at Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania. Eye health is very important, so if you don’t have a regular doctor, come see us. Here are some of the more frequently asked questions we get from our new patients.
How Often Should I Have an Eye Exam?
Most patients need to have an eye exam every year. Furthermore, annual eye exams should start at age 5. Older adults who may have cataracts or other eye problems may need more frequent exams to monitor their conditions. Always remember that if you are having any eye discomfort, sudden changes in vision, vision loss or blurry vision, call us right away for an eye exam even if your last appointment was less than a year ago.
What Should I Expect from the Eye Exam?
We perform a comprehensive eye exam that has a series of tests to determine both vision and overall eye health. If you wear contact lenses already or want to start wearing them, we perform an additional contact lens exam to fit your lenses and prescription.
Many patients ask whether the comprehensive eye exam is a dilated eye exam. Not every patient needs a dilated eye exam, but the dilation does allow the physician to better see the structures of the eye. Therefore, we will more than likely recommend a dilated eye exam, particularly if this is your first visit with us.
The dilation procedure usually affects close-up vision rather than distance vision, which remains relatively unchanged. Most patients are able to drive themselves home after the dilated eye exam, but be sure to have a pair of sunglasses to reduce glare. If you are uncomfortable about driving home, bring someone with you to the appointment.
I Think My Eye Is Infected. What Should I Do?
An eye infection can have many causes, but all of them are serious and need to be examined promptly. If you think you have an eye infection, give us a call immediately and we will work you into our schedule.
I Experienced A Sudden Change In Vision. What Should I Do?
There could be benign reasons for a sudden vision change, but some can be serious and threaten your eyesight. Call us immediately for an appointment, particularly if your vision change is accompanied by flashes of light, floaters or foggy vision.
My Eyes Feel Gritty All the Time. What Should I Do?
The gritty, scratchy feeling is a common complaint of many of our patients. You likely have dry eye. One in four of patients have dry eye symptoms. When the liquid layer of the eye produces insufficient liquid, you likely will experience these symptoms. Furthermore, the lacrimal glands in the eye might not be producing enough tears. Finally, your tear film might have enough fluid, but might be lacking important fats and oils that keep the eye moisturized; this often occurs as a result of inflammation. Regardless of the reason for the dry eye, we will perform testing to get to the root cause of your dry eye problem so that we can prescribe the best treatment.
We hope these questions have provided answers to some of the questions you may have about your visit with us. Has it been a while since your last eye exam? If so, give us a call.
