Cataract Treatment

As we age, the natural lens of our eye may become cloudy and impair our vision. This is called a cataract. Treatment of a cataract involves surgical removal of the cloudy natural lens and replacement with an artificial lens to restore clear vision.

If you think you may have a cataract or have been told you already have one, a careful exam by a specialist at Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania is the first step. We have four convenient locations in Wyomissing, Pottsville, Pottstown and Blandon.

Our staff includes a nationally-recognized team of specialized ophthalmologists, ophthalmic surgeons and eye care professionals who have been trained by some of the most respected medical facilities in the world and have decades of experience in cataracts and a wide variety of other eye conditions and diseases.

Restore Your Good Vision

The only way to “cure” a cataract is with surgery. The good news is that cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful procedures in the world, is virtually painless and offers a quick recovery. More than 3 million cataract surgeries are performed each year in the U.S.

Cataract surgery is very quick. Your doctor will use anesthetic eye drops to numb the eye, and you will be awake during surgery.  You will receive monitored anesthesia and feel sleepy and hardly aware of what is happening.

During surgery, your surgeon will use ultrasound (high frequency sound waves) to soften the cloudy lens and then remove it through a very tiny incision. The cloudy lens will be replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). In most cases, no stitches are required because the incision is so small, but your surgeon will use stitches if he/she feels they are necessary.

The surgery itself usually lasts less than 10 minutes. However, there will be some pre-surgery preparations and a short recovery period afterward, so you can expect to be in the surgery center for 1 ½ or 2 hours.

In terms of recovery, each eye is unique, but most people see well enough to drive the day after surgery. You should also be able to resume reading and watching TV by the next day and return to work within two days to one week.

The surgeons at Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania have provided successful cataract treatment to thousands of patients in Pennsylvania. We are happy to answer any questions you may have about cataracts to put your mind at ease.  Get in touch with us today to schedule an evaluation and enjoy clear vision again.
