Our surgeons are not only board-certified but also fellowship-trained in the corneal specialty. We prefer the bladeless custom LASIK procedure, called the “all-laser” technique. It uses the most advanced LASIK technology, with two different lasers performing different functions. An excimer laser is first used to make a thin incision into the cornea. After the surgery, no stitches are required; the incision heals on its own. A second laser, called a femtosecond laser, uses short pulses to modify the shape and curvature of the cornea to correct vision.

Bladeless LASIK is safe and comfortable and performed as an outpatient procedure in our state-of-the-art surgical facility. Bring a friend or family member who can drive you home; you can go home the same day as your surgery.

Corneas are much like fingerprints, and each patient’s cornea is unique. Before your surgery, you will come in for a detailed eye exam. We will create a customized map of your cornea, and the surgeon will use it as a guide for reshaping it during the surgery. The excimer laser is computer-guided, following the map to uniquely reshape your cornea.

Our surgeons prefer bladeless LASIK because it provides greater corneal stability, which translates into our surgeons being able to correct much higher refractive errors, even astigmatism.

What is recovery like? Am I a good candidate?

LASIK is quick and painless. Patients go home the same day as the surgery and rest their eyes for the rest of the day. Many of our patients are astounded when they wake up seeing clearly for the first time in years. As the eyes heal, vision sharpens. Many patients no longer need glasses or contact lenses.

Most patients are great candidates for bladeless LASIK, but some are not. Some have too much astigmatism to be corrected with LASIK, while others have insufficient corneal thickness. We do a thorough pre-surgical exam to determine whether you are a candidate. If you’re not, we will discuss other surgeries or non-surgical vision remedies for you.

For example, the surgeon may recommend Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) if you have thin corneas. This technique reshapes the cornea without cutting the flap and allows light to focus more precisely on the retina.
