LASIK Specialist in Pottstown, PA

You may know lots of folks who have had great success with LASIK surgery, but you probably still have questions about whether it is right for you. The LASIK technique is used to correct several types of vision issues. Give us a call at Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania. Our surgeons are LASIK specialists and are available to you in Pottstown, PA.

About LASIK

We perform a procedure known as custom bladeless LASIK, a state-of-the-art vision correction technique and our preferred method over all forms of LASIK surgery. This technique involves use of two lasers. The first, a femtosecond laser, safely and painlessly creates a small thin flap in the cornea. The second laser is called an excimer laser and is used to reshape the cornea to correct the vision (refractive error) according to a customized map unique to your eye. We use the Ziemer Femtosecond Laser, the most advanced LASIK flap technology available today.

Am I a good LASIK candidate?

Every patient will undergo an extensive screening process that includes an in-depth personal eye examination and consultation with our eye care professionals. In fact, the screening process is the most important process of all. We perform several different tests to see if LASIK is right for you:

  • Screening for general eye health
  • Visual acuity test
  • Refractive error is quantified
  • Dry eye test
  • Visual field screening
  • Pupil dilation test in both low and medium light
  • Ocular pressure test
  • Corneal health measurements like thickness and topography

Once we determine that you are a good candidate, we will provide you with material to learn about LASIK and you will get to meet your surgeon and ask questions.

Common questions about LASIK

Many people are concerned about pain after the procedure. Your eyes are numb during the procedure, and most people report slight pressure but no pain. After the surgery, we will apply more numbing drops that will last about 30 minutes. When those wear off, you might feel itching, dry eye or light sensitivity. For the rest of the day after your procedure, we ask that you return home to rest your body and your eyes. You will have a follow-up visit 48 hours after the surgery to ensure healing is going according to plan.

One of the most common questions we get is whether LASIK fades over time and must be redone later down the road. This is a common misconception, and no, LASIK is permanent. The mix-up comes in that as the eye ages, vision problems can still occur, but these are unrelated to LASIK. For example, you may get cataracts or develop “over 40 vision” (presbyopia), but neither have anything to do with the fact that you may have previously had a LASIK procedure.

Many patients are concerned about the risks associated with LASIK. While any surgical procedure has its risks, complications from LASIK are extremely rare.

Many people often ask about what age a person has to be to do LASIK. We require patients to be at least 18 years old because the eyes and vision often don’t stabilize until a person is in their late teens or even early twenties. As such, we require our patients to have a steady unchanged eye prescription for more than a year before we will do the LASIK procedure.

Of course, lots of folks want to know if their medical or vision insurance plan will cover LASIK. Because it is an elective procedure, most insurance companies actually do not cover it. Having said that, many vision plans do offer discounts on the procedure.
